Jeremy Renner was trying to save his adult nephew from being hit by the snow plow when the machine accidentally ran over the famous ‘Avengers’ star, according to an incident report from the Nevada Sheriff’s Office.
The ‘Hurt Locker’ star failed to activate the emergency brake as he began to slide sideways after using it to pull his nephew’s truck out of the snow, according to the new redacted report from the office of the Washoe County Sheriff (via CNN).
“The Pistenbully groomer began to slide, forcing Renner to exit the vehicle without applying the emergency brake,” reads the report’s conclusion.
“Although the Pistenbully had some mechanical issues, it is believed based on our mechanical inspection that the parking brake would prevent the Pistenbully from moving forward.
“When Renner attempted to stop or divert the Pistenbully to avoid injury to (his nephew), he was pulled under the vehicle by the track and crushed.”
The report also notes that the brake light was not working and that “mechanical issues may have been a factor in this crash.”
Renner’s nephew helped him as they waited for medical assistance to arrive and airlifted him to a trauma center. His representative confirmed at the time that he was in a “critical but stable condition” and suffered from “blunt chest trauma and orthopedic injuries” for which he underwent multiple surgeries.
Renner, 52, returned home earlier this month after spending nearly two weeks in hospital. He later revealed that he broke more than 30 bones in the snowplow accident, which happened on New Year’s Day.
“These 30+ broken bones will mend, grow stronger, just as the love and connection with family and friends grows deeper,” he wrote alongside a picture of himself in a bed frame with a doctor stretching his leg.
“Much love and appreciation to all of you,” he wrote.
